His exceptional skills and dedication earned him a prominent position as one of the King’s men at Kowdiar Palace. In addition to his prowess in the divine art, he was also a renowned contractor, known for his integrity and expertise.
As the first guru to the late SHRI Manickam Ashan, late SHRI Kolapan contractor imparted invaluable knowledge and wisdom, establishing a legacy of excellence and devotion. His teachings and principles have been passed down through generations, ensuring the preservation of the pure and divine art of Kalaripayattu within our family.

SHRI K. Manickam Ashan: A Legacy of Analytical Mind and Physical Mastery

Late SHRI K. Manickam Ashan possessed an inherently analytical mind, a trait that was significantly honed through his rigorous practice of Kalaripayattu. The discipline and dedication required in Kalari not only matured his physical abilities but also enhanced his mental acuity. This dual growth paved the way for his successful career as a Section Officer at ISRO. His journey in Kalaripayattu was shared with two other esteemed practitioners: the SHRI Karunakaran ashan and the late SHRI Sadhasivan Ashan. Together, they formed a triad of exceptional talent and devotion to the art, as depicted in the accompanying photograph. Finding of SKM Kalari: A Tribute to Three GURU’s

The three esteemed Ashan’s—late SHRI K. Manickam Ashan, the SHRI karunakaran ashan , and the late SHRI Sadhasivan Ashan—played pivotal roles in the evolution and preservation of Thekkan Kalaripayattu during their times. In recognition of their significant contributions, S.K.M KALARI was established in 1972. This institution, located in Kavadi Thalakal near Peroorkada Vazhayila, Trivandrum, stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. S.K.M KALARI symbolizes the dedication and mastery of these three legendary figures. It continues to uphold the rich traditions and teachings they imparted, serving as a beacon of Thekkan Kalaripayattu for future generations. Through S.K.M Kalari, we honor their memory and ensure that their invaluable contributions to this divine art form are remembered and cherished.

The Journey of SHRI Manickam Ashan and His Son Baburaj Ashan

Late SHRI K . Manickam Ashan had a profound understanding of the art of inner energy (prana). He recognized that every art form held its own secrets to vitality and thus, he respected every art he encountered. This deep reverence and insight into the inner workings of energy and life itself were central to his practice and teachings. In time, his son, Baburaj Ashan, joined him in his journey of Kalaripayattu. Their shared experience, enriched by the divine art, became a blissful and enlightening journey. Through observing and participating in his family’s tradition, Baburaj Ashan developed the same keen analytical and sensory skills as his father. For Baburaj Ashan, continuing his family’s tradition was not a matter of question but a definitive statement of his dedication. The journey of father and son in the realm of Kalaripayattu exemplifies the seamless passing of knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next, ensuring the preservation and growth of this ancient art.
